HELP... New user.

Hey all,

Just got the LA Pro, and I did a quick test on my Canon 24-105mm. While I'm still confuse about what distance, and what aperture (f8?) to test the lens, I was able to do a quick and dirty test last night. I know, it wasn't the greates condition as it was already dark, and I really don't have any studio lighting to make is better.

Anyway, my question is this:

Did the test, and from what almost impossible to see difference looking on my computure, the outcome shows the lens is dead-on. Good news I thought, but then I thought why not microadjust my lens to the extreme and see what happen. So dialed in +20 on one shot, and -20 on another. To my surprise I didn't see any difference on the test picture... Is that normal???

So I did a less scientific test by shooting an object with text on. I can obviously see the difference with shot taken with the +20, and -20. As expected, the +20 was back focusing heavily and vice versa. Any reason I'm not seeing this using the LA Pro??

Also, can someone give some advise on how the test the 24-105mm. I based my setup on the "distance calculator", and came up with 1.9xx feet distance at f/4 (24mm), is that correct?

Thanks in advance. I really want this to work, but so far I'm getting frustrated for really not seeing the difference.

:(

All is covered in the User Guide, but let me help with your issues...

Always shoot the LensAlign with the aperture set wide open. You only use f8 to align the LensAlign to the camera. Once the camera and LensAlign are properly positioned and aligned set the aperture wide open.

If you were testing at 24mm @ 2 feet @ f8 you will see by checking the Distance Tool that the DOF is over 1 foot which is bigger than the ruler. So you might not see any change since the DOF swamps out the test.

All dependent on DOF which is determined by Focal Length. distance and aperture that you did the test shots at.

Again, please check the User Guide and forum posts. All of this is covered. Also read through the reviews and videos. Simply, you would test the 24-105 at the 105 at about 8 feet. If needed determine the AF Adjust. Then check at the 24mm end at 2 feet to check to see if the adjustment works for the 24mm end as well. The camera makers have only given us 1 AF Adjust setting, so for a zoom lens you have to determine a compromise. Generally, since you will shoot the 24 at longer distances where the DOF is large, the 105 AF Adjust setting will work out well.

LensAlign is designed to allow you to see the health of your AF system. And the camera makers have added AF Adjust to make up for manufacturing tolerances, so that you can get better performance than out of the box if a body/lens combination does not work well together. There is no magic bullet. Just tools for you to use to help to improve the quality of your work.

Hope this helps...
